I am not going to recommend buying, I am not going to recommend trying, with the small caveat that this is a single barrel, so I have no idea what the variation between barrels looks like for a product like Benchmark, where they're going for value above all else.

Today, we're reviewing Benchmark Single Barrel, the third whiskey in the new collection of special-edition bourbons bearing the Benchmark name. After last week's Benchmark Small Batch let us down, we're hoping the brand can rebound in a big way this week. Although it has the number 8 on the label, this is not an eight-year-old product. It’s aged for three years and is bottled at 40% with a plastic cap and bottle. In August of this year, Buffalo Trace quietly released a revamped lineup of their bottom-shelf staple, Benchmark Bourbon. For years, Benchmark wore no age statement and was watered down to a measly 80 proof.

While it may not be exceptional, Benchmark proves to be a decent choice within its price range, as it avoids the unpleasant flavors often associated with budget liquors. Buffalo Trace spent some time trying to figure out how to get more people to buy Benchmark. They knew they couldn’t cut the price range any more than it already was. They also knew that even if they did, the kinds of people who buy it aren’t going to buy more bottles until they ran out. Allocated means that stores can only buy a certain amount from their distributor. And once they’re gone, they’re gone.Even lowly Buffalo Trace Bourbon, their namesake, now has “Limit 1”signs on it whenever you can find it on a shelf. That’s probably to be expected on a 95 proof, chill filtered bourbon like this. But the flavors are still nice and rounded. I can find flavors of cinnamon spiced apples, cherries and vanilla. Coupled with a sort of crème brulee taste, I would say that this bourbon is pretty perfectly balanced as far as sweet notes go. There’s even a bit of toasted oak. My expectations have been exceeded at this point.The master distillers carefully⁢ maintain specific temperature ranges ‌during fermentation to maximize the development of flavors while preserving the ​unique characteristics of the grains.

There wasn’t much surprise on this one because I’d expect a bottle that’s priced twice as much and aged twice as much to have the better score. The final tally shows that this ended up being the case. All of that isn’t to say that the Benchmark is a slouch though! On the contrary, I was quite surprised that Buffalo Trace didn’t try to shove an incomplete, hot mess of a bourbon into the market just to make a cash grab. Blend until the consistency smoothens, then pour the mixture into your margarita glass. Garnish it with additional slices of fresh mango and a basil sprig. Benchmark is made from the same low rye mashbill for which Buffalo Trace and Stagg are famous. Until recently, it had only been offered in an 80 proof version. I used Benchmark when creating my Bourbon Baller daiquiri recipe. Even at 80 proof, it has a lot of great bourbon flavor. While most people will chase the higher proof versions, the standard Old No. 8 Brand Benchmark Bourbon shouldn’t be overlooked. This is especially true for those who just want a glass of bourbon but don’t want to be confronted with a proof monster. Nose:Sweet and fruity notes like cherries, raspberries and grenadine syrup.The fruits are given extra depth with stronger vanilla and caramelscents. It should be inviting to both inexperienced and experienced drinkers alike. I even smell some of the oakthat surely come from the older bourbon barrels in every batch.
