Music is in the Sandford family's blood. John Sandford started his musical career playing piano but although it provided an excellent grounding, it was the saxophone to which John soon progressed. As a result, John was able to join his father’s dance band, one of the foremost in the South East.
Experience gained in the dance band led John into the jazz circuit, playing with both small and big bands all over the region. Various opportunities arose from this including an invitation to John to join a show band called The Fabulous Mid Life Crisis Band. They featured on national television to promote their concert at the Royal Albert Hall and this was followed by a tour in the USA centering on Florida.
John's reputation goes before him and, not surprisingly because of his exceptional versatility, he has been involved with numerous recording ventures ranging from club dance music to jazz and soul, and, more recently, the pop music charts!
Apart from playing in the Tigers’ brass section, John plays in a jazz group too. He even manages to squeeze in an occasional appearance in a saxophone quartet and a local big band.
John is busy training some of the next generation of expert musicians and he teaches music at a private school in Surrey where he provides individual tuition as well as coaching a saxophone quartet, a jazz group and the school's Big Band. What a fortunate group of people they are to have a mentor with such exceptional talent and experience!
